A new romantic relationship means new possibilities.

The coming new year is the perfect time to have a fresh start. Whether it’s turning over a new leaf, looking for new hobbies, or getting to know someone, January 1st is a wonderful opportunity to reflect upon ourselves and dive into the new year with optimism.

For many couples, the new year represents new opportunities. It might be time to start talking about future plans. Or think about moving in together. But for new couples, discussing a serious commitment could be the last thing on their minds.

They might prefer to focus on the romantic aspects of their relationship. And who can blame them? A new relationship at the start of the year definitely sounds fun and exciting.

There are so many possibilities in terms of which direction the relationship could go. Some might still be figuring out how their new relationship works. Or maybe they want to try out new dating ideas.

Here are a couple of tips you can try with your new romantic partner:

Follow the 2/2/2 rule

Credit goes to Reddit user ckernan2 who thinks he’s found the best way to keep a relationship thriving.

He said, “Never stop dating your significant other. There needs to be some sort of constant courtship to make them feel you still want them, even after all these months/years.”

He shares his 2/2/2 rule, which goes like this:

  • Every 2 weeks, we go out for the evening.

  • Every 2 months, we go out for the weekend.

  • Every 2 years, we go out for a week.

He claims this rule has made his relationship enjoyable with his significant other and firmly believes their relationship will last as long as they stick to their 2’s.

A blogger named Amanda May discovered this rule and tried it out with her husband. She revealed they had completely different work schedules and had a difficult time going out on date nights.

After trying it out, she attested how effective it was in keeping the spark in her relationship alive.

She also suggested adjusting the rule in a way that benefits both parties, especially if it’s too much or too little. Feel free to change the number that best fits the schedule for you and your partner. Just make sure to plan ahead and take note of your financial situation as well.

Take your time learning about each other

As exciting as new relationships get, establishing a lasting romantic relationship is a big achievement. So once the honeymoon phase wears off, you might have a few challenges in keeping the romance alive.

Luckily, relationships are an evolving process. People continue to grow and change. Even if you think you know everything about your partner, you might be surprised to discover a few things you might have missed.

If no one feels like they’re in any hurry, then take the time to learn about each other. Relationships aren’t built in a day. It takes months or even years to cultivate a solid relationship that can endure an entire lifetime.

Be positive

It’s easy to fall into a pattern of negative thinking. In fact, according to an article on veryweelmind .com, “Negative events have a greater impact on our brains than positive ones.”

Psychologists refer to this as negative bias, and it has a powerful effect on our behavior, decisions, and even relationships. So if you catch yourself thinking or saying negative things about your relationship, then your partner might start to feel it’s negative too.

You’ll want to change those negative thoughts into something more positive. A good method to upturn those thoughts is by practicing saying positive words and affirmations out loud. Keep your body language positive as well.

The more you practice this trick, the more you’ll feel positive. Because you always want to be honest with your partner and be your authentic self.

Let the small things go

When you find yourself in a new relationship, there might be lots of things you find charming with your partner - and lots of little things that annoy you as well.

If left unchecked, the small things tend to pile up until a huge fight breaks out. You both storm off into your own homes and turn to family or friends for comfort.

You eventually manage to reconcile and continue the relationship, but you or your partner might carry a grudge about it.

We have to accept that we all sometimes make mistakes. If you really think about it, is getting angry over something so small worth it? If not, then let it go.

If it keeps annoying you, then find the root cause of why it’s upsetting for you and focus on that concern.

Oftentimes, we get upset by the smallest action without realizing there’s a deeper meaning to it. By finding out the real cause of the problem, we’ll be able to let go of the little things that annoy us about our partner.

Talk about future plans

Considering you’ve just started a relationship, talking about future plans might make it sound like you’re in a hurry to get into a committed relationship. You’re still getting to know each other. Your partner might hesitate if you bring it up.

So why is this included in the article?

Because getting into a new relationship means you might be spending a lot of time together. Discussing future plans might sound scary, but what if both of you don’t have the same life goals?

Talk to each other. Figure out what your partner’s goals are. Do they align with yours? If not, then you need to figure out if both of you still want to keep the relationship going.

Despite how it sounds, avoid the all-or-nothing thinking. There’s always room to negotiate with your partner, especially if both of you really want the relationship to work.

As long as you keep talking about it, you’ll likely find a middle ground when it comes to negotiating about the future.

Have you decided on what to do for the New Year?

The key to making new relationships last is by keeping the spark alive.

It pays to be optimistic and to focus your efforts on building a lasting romance with your new partner. The memories you make and the experiences you go through together are something you can’t recreate with someone else.

This is especially important for the upcoming new year when everything feels fresh and optimistic, and you’re both still figuring out what works best in terms of new relationship rules and dynamics.

Make this year special by being open to new challenges and letting go of old grudges and negative self-beliefs. We all deserve to be with someone we care about.

Do you currently have someone to celebrate New Year’s with? If not, then consider international dating. Because who says you can only date women in your area?

There are lots of beautiful single foreign ladies across the globe looking for love. And who knows, you might just find your future life partner among them.
