Most content creators these days say that we have to take into consideration which sibling we are dating, whether they are the oldest or the youngest. Eldest siblings are mostly known for being hyper-independent and aren’t good communicators, while the youngest are known to be free-spirited and usually get away with everything.
But how about getting to know a middle child? Why aren’t they often brought into discussion?
Bruce Hopman, a middle child himself and founder of the International Middle Child Union, called for a middle child strike to ensure “mid kids” are also celebrated every August 12th of the year. This movement has been acclaimed since 2012.

Because of their birth order, middle children are great team players and are frequently found in different social circles. Knowing more than one side of the sibling fight, they tend to be more empathetic and are skilled in compromising and persuading. However, they also have trouble feeling a sense of belonging with groups as they often feel it in their families.
Most of them express a negative view of their childhood. They are convinced their parents don’t look after them that much, resulting in them being more rebellious compared to their siblings. They also tend to be the ones who move the farthest away once they move out of the house which stems from the constant feeling of being misunderstood.
Middle children know how to take care of themselves from a young age, especially once their younger sibling arrives and the older sibling wants to play more with other older kids. They don’t necessarily see being alone as a sad thing because they’ve gotten used to it. So, if you see one enjoying their own company, let them be and don’t take it personally.
As per studies, 85% of middle children possess open-mindedness, which means you don’t have to walk on eggshells when you’re with them. They mostly have laid-back personalities and are interested in risks and recreation. While the oldest sibling gets to be an overachiever, the middle child gravitates to sports and arts. So, relax and don’t overthink it!

Middle Child Day doesn’t exist without any good reason. The majority of testaments from middle children claim that they constantly yearn for and seek attention, which makes Adler’s Birth Order Theory more accepted. Take notice when they accomplish something and acknowledge it.
Be present on their big days (birthdays, graduations, job promotions, etc.), compliment them, and treat them with something you know they like! Regardless of their birth order, to fully appreciate anyone is to see them as an individual first and foremost. From there, you can celebrate their uniqueness.
